Within the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) of Hasselt University, the following position (m/f) is available:
PhD student Stem Cell Research (2×2 years)
(mandate 090/32/067)
Job description
Research at the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED, Hasselt University) focuses on disease and repair mechanisms in neurological diseases and the development of new therapeutics for these disorders. While stem cell therapy is successful in hematology, it is far from clear whether it can be considered a realistic option for neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). In this PhD project, we will evaluate the effect of (neurally induced) easily accessible stem cell populations in animal models of MS (EAE). The major focus will be on neuroregenerative effects in combination with immune modulatory aspects. In addition, genetic engineering strategies will be evaluated to enhance therapeutical value of exogenously applied stem cells. This project is performed in close collaboration with stem cell experts of the Universities of Antwerp and Leuven. The successful candidate will use a wide variety of neuroimmunological techniques such as cell cultures, experimental animal models, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular biology.
The ‘Conflict Studies and Management Programme’ (CSMP) is a new programme implemented by the ‘Willy Brandt School of Public Policy’ in Erfurt (Brandt School) and the ‘German Academic Exchange Service’ (DAAD).
It is addressed to Master’s students, doctoral students and senior researchers with an interest in conflict management in research and practise.
The CSMP aims at preparing students who want to pursue a career in relevant organisations and seeks to produce applicable knowledge in the area of conflict studies.
Northumbria University, through its Corporate Strategy, seeks to establish a position among the best of a new type of excellent university ? strong in the fundamental activities of teaching and research and in using these activities to make a real difference to people, enterprises and communities.
As part of our continuing commitment to research and scholarship, Northumbria University is offering 140 doctoral and MRes funded research studentships, available for uptake from 1 August 2010.

Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, Institute for Mathematical Methods in Economics, Vienna University of Technology
We are looking for a Ph.D. student for the broad areas of credit risk models, credit derivatives or general dependence modelling in risk management. The position is in the Christian Doppler Laboratory on Portfolio Risk Management (PRisMa Lab). The laboratory is located within the research group for financial and actuarial mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology, it is headed by Prof. Uwe Schmock. The laboratory is funded by the Christian Doppler Research Association, which is a non-profit association aiming to promote high-quality research, development and knowledge transfer in Austria. The research is carried out jointly with the Bank Austria, the Austrian Federal Financing Agency (ÖBFA) and FJA Feilmeier & Junker. Your main area of activity will be high-quality research in “Modelling, pricing, and hedging counterparty credit exposure” (see the recent Springer book by Cesari et al. with the same title for details), in particular joint modelling of the dependence of market dynamics and default mechanisms, the integration of historical and market implied data, and the development of efficient numerical algorithms for portfolios with complex products, always with a view towards practical applicability.
