Erasmus Mundus: Master Scholarships in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE) IMFSE 2011

The “International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE)”, is a two-year educational programme in the Erasmus Mundus framework. This master course is commonly organized by:

  • Ghent University, Belgium (coordinator)
  • Lund University, Sweden
  • The University of Edinburgh, UK

The main objective is creating an educational programme that provides the required knowledge for a professional fire safety engineer in a Performance Based Design environment. Besides interuniversity cooperation, student mobility in Europe is one of the main points of interest of the overall programme. The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives the students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of each of the three universities.

Postdoctoral Researcher UGent/IMEC: Silicon Photonics Integrated Fiber Interrogator

Silicon Photonics Integrated Fiber Interrogator

In the European project SMARTFIBER, we have set up an academic-industrial consortium, that will develop a smart miniaturized microsystem which integrates optical fiber sensor technology, nanophotonic chip technology and low power wireless technology. The smart system will enable for the first time fully embedded structural heath monitoring of composites used as structural parts in wind turbines, satellites, airplanes, civil constructions, oil pipes, gas wells and many more. The smart microsystem will be the enabler for sustainable development of these composite based systems.

The heart of this smart microsystem for structural health monitoring is an advanced silicon photonics chip.

The Joint International Master Scholarships 2011 in Rural Development (IMRD)

The joint International Master in Rural Development (IMRD), part of the European Erasmus Mundus program, offers the opportunity to study the European vision on rural development in its diversity of approaches and applications.

The objective is to train specialists in integrated rural development, focussed on socio-economic and institutional aspects, not only from the European Union but also from developed, developing and transition countries outside the European Union through a 2 year master program (120 ECTS) jointly organised by seven European leading institutes in agricultural economics and rural development.

The Master program is offered by Ghent University (Belgium), Agrocampus Ouest (France), Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany), the University of Cordoba (Spain), in collaboration with Wageningen University (The Netherlands), the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Slovakia) and the University of Pisa (Italy). these will be joined by universities in China, Ecuador, India and South Africa.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis (AFEPA) 2011-2012

The European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis aims at providing a high quality education in designing and assessing public policies targeted to the agricultural and food sector as well as the rural environment. This European Master responds to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the various and often complex socio-economic and environmental effects of these policies either in a functioning market economy as in the European Union or in economies in a development or transition phase. The European Master offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses in economics and quantitative methods as well as in agricultural, food and environmental sciences, agricultural and trade policy, environmental and natural resource policy, rural development policy and agribusiness management and market analysis. To connect theory and methodology to practice, a problem solving project is developed and presented as a master thesis at the end of the two-year curriculum.

PhD Position: Physicochemical Characterization in Biological Media of Nanomedicines for Gene Therapy by Advanced Light Microscopy

Doctoral research position at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ghent University

Context of the research project
In biopharmacy and pharmaceutical technology, intensive research is aimed at developing ‘intelligent’ nanoscopic particles that are capable of efficiently delivering drugs to target cells. In the field of gene therapy, special interest goes to nanoparticles containing nucleic acids, such as plasmid DNA and small interference RNA. Such nanoparticles, typically having a size in the order of 100 nm, are created by spontaneous electrostatic complexation of the anionic nucleic acids with cationic carrier materials, such as cationic lipids or polymers.
