The Masdar Institute aims to establish a worldclass, graduate university to provide the region with future leaders and critical thinkers in science and technology, and to position Abu Dhabi as a knowledge hub and an engine for socio-economic growth.

Masdar Institute is the Middle East’s fi rst dedicated graduate institution created to tackle the most important challenge facing our planet today – to develop cutting-edge energy solutions that will ensure the economic growth and prosperity of all nations without damaging the environment.

The Institute is the product of the enlightened leadership of Abu Dhabi, stemming from the inspired vision of His Highness, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE.
Thanks to his legacy of recognizing the need to preserve the environment and the importance of developing the human resources of the UAE, the current leadership has made a substantial commitment to build the nation into one of the key knowledge economies in the world.

Scholarship / Fellowship

Two types of scholarship/fellowship are available:

1. MASDAR Institute Fellowship Program
   (for UAE nationals only to study overseas)
2. MASDAR Institute Graduate Scholarship
   (for all nationalities to study at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi)

1. MASDAR Institute Fellowship Program (for UAE nationals only to study overseas)

This is open only to UAE nationals who will be placed at one of the Masdar Research partners to earn their Masters and/or PhD degrees. The partners include:

• Imperial College London, (UK)
• RWTH Aachen University (Germany)
• German Aerospace Center-DLR (Germany)
• Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan)
• University of Waterloo (Canada)
• University of Central Florida (USA)
• University of Texas, Austin (USA)
• University of Freiburg (Germany)

Upon graduation, each scholar will be given the opportunity to work at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology founded through a cooperative agreement with the world renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Graduates of this fellowship program will also have the option to work with one of Masdar’s partners or ventures, to further develop and apply the scientific knowledge gained.

Current research tracks include: solar energy (photovoltaic and thermal); water technologies; carbon capture and storage; biofuels; energy storage; and energy efficiency.

Applicants must fulfill the following conditions:

• UAE citizens
• Bachelors or Masters degree in engineering or science with a GPA of 3.2 or above
• Strong analytical skills
• Creative and innovative
• Good communication skills
• Dynamic and positive attitude
• Ability to envision and help shape the future

The Fellowships will be competitively awarded according to academic excellence, independent intellectual contribution and commitment to purpose. Each Fellowship will cover educational and living expenses, in additional to a pre-set salary and foreign living allowance.

2. MASDAR Institute Graduate Scholarship (for all nationalities to study at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi)

Full scholarship is available to qualified talented students who meet its high admission standards which include appropriate TOEFL score, GRE and an excellent CGPA from a recognized university. A minimum CGPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) or 2:1 in the British system, minimum TOEFL score of 577 (91 on the IBT) or academic IELTS (min 6.5), and a minimum GRE quantitative score of 700 are the basic requirements without which an applicant will most likely not be considered.

Students accepted into the Masdar Institute will be offered a full scholarship which includes the following:

• 100% tuition fee scholarship
• Textbooks
• Laptop
• Medical Insurance
• Housing in a single unit apartment (at the Masdar campus)
• International students will receive reimbursement of travel expenses (economy class air-ticket) into Abu Dhabi and back home after completion of studies. Travel expenses (return economy class air-ticket) back to the student’s home country at the end of the 1st year of studies will also be reimbursed.
• Reimbursement of TOEFL and GRE exam fees (upon registration at Masdar Institute and submission of original receipts)
• A competitive stipend per month (cost of living allowance).
• No bond or conditions to the scholarship upon graduation

The scholarship and benefits are subject to the student maintaining a minimum CGPA as determined by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and satisfactory progress on their research.
