[UK] Roehampton University: Sacred Heart Scholarship scheme for Postgraduate Study
Roehampton University today announced the launch of the Roehampton University Sacred Heart Scholarship scheme.
The scheme will provide an average of 10 new scholarships a year for postgraduate study at Roehampton University in London. Students may follow a programme of study or research in any subject area, normally at either masters or doctoral level. The aim of the scheme is to support academically excellent students, particularly those with financial need. It is hoped that the scholarships will especially attract students from overseas, including developing countries, as both the University and the Society are keen to promote international understanding and to support candidates who intend to make a contribution to their communities following the completion of their studies.
The Scholarship will usually consist of free tuition and free or subsidised accommodation in Digby Stuart College, one of the four founding colleges that constitute Roehampton University.
The College was established in 1874 by the Society of the Sacred Heart and this new scheme celebrates the ongoing partnership between the Society and the University and recognises their joint commitment to education and social justice. For this reason, applications are particularly welcome from candidates who have been educated at a school, college or university with a Roman Catholic foundation, and/or whose proposed area of study or research is broadly relevant to the areas of social justice, human rights, inter-religious understanding, education, the environment, or gender issues.

Notes to editors
1. Details of how the scheme will operate will be announced via the University website: www.roehampton.ac.uk.
2. Roehampton is one of the leading new universities in the UK for research, being rated first for both Dance and Biological Anthropology in the 2008 RAE. A third of its research was rated 3* or 4* in the RAE (‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-class’). It has one of the highest concentrations of National Teaching Fellows in the country and has a strong international atmosphere, with over 130 nationalities represented on campus. It is London’s only campus university and was recently ranked first in London for campus environment. Its four Colleges – Digby Stuart, Froebel, Southlands and Whitelands – have a tradition of excellence in education stretching back to the mid-nineteenth century.
3. The Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) is an international religious order whose work has a particular emphasis on education. The order was founded in 1800 by Madeleine Sophie Barat in France. In 1850, the Convent of the Sacred Heart School was established at Roehampton. A teacher training college for girls followed in 1874. The College was renamed in 1946 in honour of its founding Principal, Mabel Digby, and her successor, the eminent educationalist and author, Janet Stuart, both of whom were RSCJ. The College is now part of Roehampton University.
