CREAM is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme and has started on September 1, 2009. CREAM includes 20 PhD (three years) and 3 postdoc (two years) projects. All projects are related to developing ecological models for the risk assessment of chemicals, primarily pesticides. Many projects include, or even focus on, empirical work.
We are looking now for candidates for CREAM’s 23 projects. Projects should start preferably on January 15, 2010, but earlier (or later) starts are possible. Deadline for applications is October 23.
How to apply
Application to CREAM
We encourage applicants to consider more than one project within CREAM. If you are interested in more than one project, please include a list of priorities in your application. Before you apply, it is important that you check whether you are eligible for the position (see Eligibility). Please follow the instructions How to apply when compiling your application, and send all application documents to Volker Grimm (volker.grimm@ufz.de with cc: amelie.schmolke@ufz.de) by 23 October 2009.
Applications will be forwarded to the corresponding project leaders. The final acceptance decision will be made by the corresponding project leader, mainly based on your scientific background.
Eligibility
Rules of mobility and conditions of nationality applicable to eligible researchers:
Marie Curie Initial Training Networks aim to foster the mobility of researchers. Thus, eligible applicants can be nationals of any country, except for the country where the project is hosted (e.g., for a CREAM PhD project in Germany, no German candidate may apply). In addition, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of selection by the host institution (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account).
A researcher holding more than one nationality will be able to carry out a period of mobility in the country of his/her nationality in which he/she has not resided during the previous 5 years. Short stays such as for holidays are not taken into account.
Eligible fellows are:
Early-stage researchers (applicants for PhD positions) are defined as those who are, at the time of selection by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.
Experienced researchers (applicants for postdoc positions) are defined as those who are, at the time of selection by the host institution, in the first five years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. They must, at the time of the selection by the host organisation, either be in possession of a doctoral degree, irrespective of the time taken to acquire it, or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience, including the period of early stage research defined above.
For your interest and further information on eligibility: EU-document with detailed information about eligibility etc.
Salary
Candidates will be recruited under an employment contract with full social security coverage. Standard rates:
The rates are adjusted by a correction coefficient that depends on the country of the host institute, and they include the employer’s contribution, social security, and taxes.
How to apply
We will send a confirmation of your application to you via email. If you do not receive a confirmation within a week, please contact amelie.schmolke@ufz.de. Please note that we will not consider, or reply to, applications that do not follow the above instructions and provide the required information and documents.
If you are considered by one of the CREAM research groups as a PhD student or postdoc, we will inform you about the subsequent steps, e.g. interviews etc.
Please feel free to ask for help at any stage of your application (amelie.schmolke@ufz.de).
19 Ph.D. / 3 Postdoctoral positions
CREAM (Mechanistic Effect Models for Ecological Risk Assessment of Chemicals) is an EC–funded network with partners from nine European countries. The aim of CREAM is to improve ecological risk assessments of chemicals, which is highly relevant for food production and environmental safety, by using mechanistic models that explore the effects of chemicals on individuals and populations.
You will be involved in developing ecological models and accompanying experiments that will be used for model validation. Organisms ranging from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates to mammals will be the focus of the projects, and approaches will encompass ecotoxicology, population ecology, and species interactions at various spatial scales. All projects have exciting dimensions both in basic research and application. Regular network training events will help you to develop your skills in modelling, statistical and programming methods, ecotoxicology and risk assessment, and complementary skills. Joining CREAM, you will be part of the next generation of ecological modellers with excellent career options in academia, industry, and public authorities.
We are looking for candidates with experience and interest in one or more of the following areas: population ecology, ecotoxicology, ecological risk assessment, modelling, and programming. Further details about the individual projects and participating institutions can be found at www.cream-itn.eu.
Applicants should follow the information and instructions given at http://cream-itn.eu/how-to-apply. Applications should be sent by email to volker.grimm@ufz.de.
Application Deadline: 23 October 2009
