[Sweden] PhD Studentships in Cognitive Hearing Science, Linkoping University

Published on Dec 15 2008 // Europe, PhD, Scholarships in Sweden

Linkoping University announces positions as
Doctoral student in Disability Research, specializing in Cognitive Hearing Science, especially:

  • cognitive development (LiU-2008/04698)
  • cognitive modelling (LiU-2008/04699)
  • Tinnitus research (LiU-2008/04700)

at the HEAD Graduate School on HEaring And Deafness.

The HEAD Graduate School forms part of the Swedish Institute for Disability Research (SIDR), which is hosted by IBL, Section for Cognition, Development and Disability (CDD). SIDR was established in the year 2000 in collaboration between the universities of Linköping and Örebro. SIDR provides scientific training to PhD level and is European leader in the field of Disability Research; a multidisciplinary area spanning faculty boundaries. Scientific training at SIDR offers doctoral students the opportunity to collaborate in multidisciplinary groups, develop a cross-disciplinary mind-set and come into contact with the international research frontier. Membership of the HEAD Graduate School enhances the training provided by SIDR by offering strategic training opportunities within the HEAD field.

Duties

  • Doctoral student in cognitive development:
The doctoral student will take part in a research project within the field of neural, cognitive and communicative develoment in deaf and hearing-impaired children with cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. In particular, investigations will focus on development in a longitudinal perspective and how demographic factors and cognitive intervention may alter the course of cognitive development. The doctoral student should focus principally on the scientific training. However, a doctoral student may engage in teaching, research and administration, if such work is available.
  • Doctoral student in cognitive modelling:
The doctoral students will take part in a research project within the field of cognition, communication and disability based on experimental methods and aimed at revealing the mechanisms behind the phenomenon of cognitive mismatch – that is, the cognitive processing mechanisms which engage when communication is effortful due to signal degradation. In particular, investigations will focus on how cognitive capacity interacts with the ability to cope with degradation of the auditory speech stream (by noise, hearing impairment or signal processing in a hearing aid) and how this basic interaction may be affected by attention and incongruent auditory and visual information. The doctoral students should focus principally on the scientific training. However, a doctoral student may engage in teaching, research and administration, if such work is available.
  • Doctoral student in tinnitus research:
The doctoral student will take part in a research project within the field of tinnitus treatment and mechanisms. In particular, research on neural and cognitive correlates of the tinnitus experience as well as clinical outcome research will be part of the project. Part of the work requires training as clinical psychologist, mainly the outcome study. The doctoral student should focus principally on the scientific training. However, a doctoral student may engage in teaching, research and administration, if such work is available.

Requirements
Employment as a doctoral student is conditional on acceptance to the scientific training programme. There are basic and special requirements for acceptance to the scientific training programme in Disability Research. The basic requirement for acceptance comprises a first degree at advanced level and completed courses totalling at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge gained otherwise. In special circumstances, the faculty board may allow exemption from the basic requirement for an individual applicant. The special requirement for acceptance to the scientific training programme in Disability Research is at least 90 ECTS in a subject of relevance to the field of Disability Research. The basic and special requirements will also be considered to be met by an individual who has an equivalent older degree, or equivalent knowledge gained otherwise. In special circumstances, the faculty board may allow exemption from the special requirement for an individual applicant.

Persons who prior to 1 July 2007 met the basic requirement for acceptance to the scientific training programme in Disability Research, shall thereafter also be considered to have met the basic requirement, but only until the end of June 2015. The basic requirement before 1 July 2007 was a degree comprising at least 180 ECTS or equivalent knowledge gained otherwise.

Linköping University continues to develop as an attractive and creative work place characterized by equal opportunities, and actively promotes diversity and gender equality. Applications from persons with disabilities are especially welcome.
